What makes a communication device itself?

Primary Function: Communication devices have communication as their main function. For example, a smartphone, radio, or computer is primarily designed to transmit and receive messages, whether through voice, text, or digital files.

Secondary Functions: Devices that have communication but are not primarily designed for it. For example a smart refrigerator that can connect to the internet and send alerts about its status has communication features but is not primarily a communication device.
Devices whose main purpose is not related to communication are generally not considered communication devices. For example, a microwave, a vacuum cleaner, or a washing machine are designed for specific tasks related to household chores and do not facilitate communication as their primary function.
